Registration open for new UMW cyber-security certification program

The University of Mary Washington announced recently that registration is now open for a new cyber-security certification program, a program made possible through GO Virginia funding.

A Community Gathering on creating Good Jobs Here – Part 3

On November 21st, Good Jobs Here held its third and final event to create, measure, execute, and foster economic growth and job in creation in the Fredericksburg region. Utilizing a GO Virginia grant, the George Washington Regional Commission partnered with leading local organizations to create a shared understanding of current data, analysis, strengths, and opportunities for this region. Good Jobs Here plans to present their findings at local government meetings to keep everyone in the know.

Welding Training Program

Westmoreland County was awarded $130,000 in GO Virginia funding to equip a welding training facility with 15 workstations and train 40 welders for employment at local businesses within Region 6. To date, the program has trained 70 welders with 30 of these welders receiving jobs! What a great success!

Highlights from the December 9th Full Council Meeting

The Council considered two applications for approval at their meeting. The first application was presented by Stafford Count EDA to study the marketplace for a cyber entrepreneur accelerator program in the Fredericksburg region. The second application was presented by the Northern Neck PDC to study workforce training needs in the RCC footprint. Both projects were well received by the Council but were asked to make edits and be reviewed again at the February 10th Council meeting.

The Council discussed their response to the State Board that the Council wrote ahead of Chairman Beale attending the State Board meeting to discuss current issues with GO Virginia.

GO Virginia for Broadband Funding

GO Virginia has issued new guidance around the use of using GO Virginia for broadband planning and implementation. GO Virginia funding can be used for planning purposes and middle-mile implementation. If you are interested in applying for GO Virginia funding for Broadband, please contact Jennifer Morgan, 

GO Virginia Stakeholder Workgroup Meetings

At the December 9th GO Virginia State Board meeting, Chairman Farrell heard from each of the regions around current issues with GO Virginia. Chairman Farrell instructed DHCD to set up workgroup meetings in which the four main issues could be discussed in depth. These topics are:

  • Priority Investment Areas – Talent Pipeline Development 

  • Regional Collaboration – Match Requirements 

  • Program Focus – Traded Sectors & High Wage Jobs 

  • Project Evaluation – Return on Investment

The first of these sessions was held on January 24th to discuss Talent and Pipeline Development. The session focused on if current GO Virginia policies match GO Virginia’s overall programmatic goals.

The next sessions will be held on January 31st, February 7th, and February 21st.

Council Update

Resignation from the Council

It is with great sadness that Region 6 announces the resignation of Anne Richardson, from the Council. Ms. Richardson has served on the Council since its inception. On behalf of the Council and staff, we would like to thank Ms. Richardson for her time. 

At this time, the Nominating Committee is searching for a member of the community to replace Ms. Richardson on the Council.

To better assist potential applicants, the Council has partnered with the local Regional Economic Development Organizations (Fredericksburg Regional Alliance, Northern Neck Chesapeake Bay Region Partnership, and Middle Peninsula Alliance) to help assist applicants in LOIs and applications.
