Joel Griffin

Joel Griffin is an entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist with 25 years of private industry consulting experience and 20 years in government contracting. As Founder and Partner of Riphean Investments, he guides the corporate strategy and growth of its partners.

Joel launched Riphean Investments in 2021 with Partner Brian DeMuth, three years after architecting the highly successful sale of Dependable Global Solutions, a cybersecurity company he co-founded in 2011, to Arlington Capital — becoming Centauri and now KBR. Prior to that, he also previously worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, Unisys and Lockheed Martin, supporting DoD, DHS, Law Enforcement and the Intelligence community.

Joel is also the Founder and CEO of Riphean Group, the parent company. Riphean Group is a growth investor spanning multiple industries across private equity & venture capital, hospitality, and as an angel investor in primarily veteran owned small businesses. Alongside its commercial activities, Riphean Group is committed to philanthropy through its support for Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation and local organizations

that enhance quality of life and support for our respective missions. Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation is a non-profit co-founded by Joel and his wife, Jennifer, in honor of their oldest daughter. The foundation is dedicated to raising awareness and education of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Since its establishment, Gwyneth’s Gift has trained over 15,000 people in Hands-Only CPR and placed 88 AED devices in Virginia resulting in seven lives saved.

Joel currently serves on the Stafford Economic Development Authority (EDA) as Chairman; on the Board of Directors for The Fredericksburg Regional Alliance, Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Stafford Hospital Foundation; on the Cyber Security Advisory Board for the Virginia Community College System; and on the Mary Ball Washington Regional Council. As Chairman of Stafford EDA, Joel led the grant initiatives to provide COVID-19 relief funding to locally owned or operated businesses in 2020 and is currently leading the county’s broadband expansion initiative.

Previously, Joel’s collaboration with Stafford Hospital, Stafford Fire and Rescue and the county school district resulted in Stafford County being named the first HeartSafe community in the Commonwealth by the Rappahannock Emergency Medical Services (REMS) Council. It also led to the deployment of the PulsePoint technology within Stafford County, one of the fist adopters in the Commonwealth, which provides CPR trained users with mobile notifications of an emergency in their vicinity.  His role on the EDA combined with his support of public schools led to development of the Stafford Workforce Education Program, which helps students forge career paths in the private sector space.

In 2022, Joel received the Prince B. Woodard award “in recognition of exceptional leadership” and in 2015, he received the Joe Dangler Leadership Award from the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber for his “community leadership support”. He also received the Entrepreneur of the Year with the Stafford EDA in 2012.  In 2001, Joel was awarded the Patriotic Civilian Service Award by the U.S. Army for actions taken immediately and following 9/11 at the Pentagon.
